ST. LOUIS – EducationPlus' Cooperating School District Insurance Trust (CSD), a a self-insured option available to all public school districts in Missouri. will start including same-sex spouses and their dependent children.
Now in its 23rd year, CSD Insurance Trust provides insurance benefits to 16,000 school employees, retirees, their spouses and dependents in 26 area school districts.
The announcement was made in an email to districts early this week.
As a result of last month’s [U.S. District] Court ruling, the CSD Insurance Trust has amended their plan to include same-sex spouses and their dependent children. If you have been legally married to a same-sex spouse since Nov. 7, 2014, and would like to add your spouse or dependents to the district insurance, you may qualify for a one-time benefit extension through Friday, Dec. 19, 2014.
As a reminder, you have 30 days from a qualifying life event (i.e. marriage, birth, adoption, etc.) to make changes to your insurance benefits.
On Nov. 7, U.S. District Court Judge Otrie D. Smith ruled Missouri’s marriage ban unconstitutional. The case is currently being appealed to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
