ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The St. Louis Crusaders Rugby Football Club (RFC) have kicked off their fall season with a victory over the Madison Minotaurs, winning 62-31. The Crusaders is St. Louis’ only all-inclusive men’s rugby team.

CrusaderslogoFollowing the public coming out announcements of rugby stars Sam Stanley (England 7s) and Keegan Hirst (Batley Bulldogs), the St. Louis Crusaders are letting the St. Louis LGBT community and its supporters know there is a team that is accepting players regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, height, weight, build, level of fitness, or level of experience. They extend an invite to those who have always wanted to play, including former high school players, current and past collegiate players, as well as anyone who wants to be a part of a fun and exciting team.

“I joined rugby for the exercise, I stayed for the brotherhood,” said Mike MacKillop, Director of Recruiting. “The epitome of teamwork and tradition, it has taught me that there will always be someone there to have your back. Whether on or off the pitch, you know there will be a fellow rugger ‘with you’.”

The team was founded in 2009 with the goal of promoting the sport of rugby within under-represented groups in St. Louis, especially gay and bisexual men. Today, the Crusaders are a socially and ethnically diverse group of men who hope to inspire others to be who they are without fear of rejection.

The Crusaders compete in friendly matches with various teams across the region including the Nashville Grizzlies, Columbia Outlaws, and Cape Girardeau Scorpions. On September 26, the Crusaders take on the Columbia Outlaws in their home opener.

If you are interested in playing rugby with the St. Louis Crusaders, practices are open to the public. The team practices on the fields behind the tennis courts in Forest Park, across from the Visitor Center on Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. and on Saturdays from 12-2 p.m.
