Dear Equality Supporter,

This past Tuesday, Governor Nixon issued Executive Order 15-04, directing state agencies to implement the Obergefell decision and ensure ALL married couples have access to the same rights and benefits.

On that very same day, Governor Brownback of my home state of Kansas issued his own executive order that he says protects religious freedom. The Kansas executive order ensures that clergy would not be forced to perform marriages for same-sex couples. While the Supreme Court decision did not change the fact that clergy are not forced to perform marriages for any couple, including same-sex couples, the contrast on Tuesday for our neighboring states is clear.

In Governor Nixon’s speech about the executive order, he noted the importance of the Missouri Nondiscrimination Act (MONA), adding that even though we now have marriage equality, Missourians can still be fired for being LGBT, saying, “Same-sex couples now have the right to get married, but here in Missouri, individuals can still be fired for being gay. That’s wrong, it’s not who we are – and it must change."

Click here to add your support and echo Governor Nixon. The time is now to protect our community from discrimination.

In solidarity,

Steph Perkins
