"The agency’s proposed definition would define sex as either male or female, unchangeable, and determined by the genitals that a person is born with, according to a draft reviewed by The New York Times. Any dispute about one’s sex would have to be clarified using genetic testing. Sex means a person’s status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth. The sex listed on a person’s birth certificate, as originally issued, shall constitute definitive proof of a person’s sex unless rebutted by reliable genetic evidence.”

This proposal introduced last week by the Trump Administration’s Health and Human Services Department is poised to revoke the rights and protections guaranteed to some 1.4 million Americans who identify as transgender by redefining the legal definition of gender under Title IX, the federal civil rights law that bans discrimination in education on the basis of gender. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is also urging key government agencies, including the departments of Education, Justice and Labor, to follow their lead by seeking to define gender “on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable.”

DHHS plans to present the new definition to the Justice Department before the end of the year.

This terrifies me!

If adopted, the change would effectively roll back policies enacted by the Obama administration which updated the legal concept of sex in federal programs, including Title IX, to reflect an inclusive understanding of gender identity as determined by an individual’s choice, not biological attributes at birth. These are policies that I am protected under.

Being intersex is not a choice. It’s biology. I am living proof that sex is not as binary as male or female. My existence cannot be erased.

It’s time to fight, resist, combat, withstand this kind of anachronistic thinking.

However, I cannot do it alone.

My cisgender gay male community, I need you.

I need you to stand with me in solidarity, shoulder to shoulder, fighting at all costs this archaic belief that sex is binary. I need you to use your voice and let this administration know that you support me and that you will not let me be erased. I need your privilege to help me bend the ear of those in power to listen to my story. I need you to march with me in protest of this antiquated, demoralizing proposal. I need you to not be to silent. I need you to show some compassion. I need you to care about me. I need you.

I need you, like you needed me, during the AIDS epidemic, when I took care of you when you were sick and abandoned by those who supposedly loved you and when health care professionals wouldn’t be with you. I need you, like you needed me, during "Don’t Ask Don’t Tell" when I stood in the cold and protested along side you holding signs and screaming till I was hoarse. I need you, like you needed me, when you were “gay bashed” and I helped organize the March Against Violence. I need you, like you needed me, when I marched, protested, phone banked, raised money to help you achieve Marriage Equality. I need you, like you needed me, for benefits, birthday parties, anniversary celebrations, holiday parties, and wedding receptions. I need you, like you needed me, when you fell on hard times and needed a shoulder to cry on. I need you.

Gays For Trump, I need you to get your head out of his ass and see that this president is trying to erase me as a person. Many of you needed me when you first came out, got drunk at the bars, and I was there to guide and protect you.

Yes, I’m that bitch calling in favors because my life and mere existence depend on you and me fighting together. I cannot let this proposal become adopted. I cannot do it alone. I need you.
