I'm sure most folk saw the news yesterday, with the leaked memo from the current administration, re: a new initiative to protect religious freedom.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) have been instructed to redefine sex and gender to mean: the gender assigned at birth upon examination of genitalia, according to the original birth certificate.

This is a genuine catastrophe for Trans people. It means no one could get a corrected ID or other documents changed, even with a court order.

It means that even the luckiest and most privileged of us, who have changed everything, from birth certificate to credit lines, medical records, insurance, passport, driver's license, social security, diplomas, and professional credentials, are not safe (about 11% of us). We will lose all of our changes, too.

This new executive order will erase Trans people.

Trans people won't be able to get jobs in many states, and will lose what few employment protections they have.

But I ask everyone to breathe deeply, take a moment, and realize that we'll fight this, too, just like everything else Republican we're fighting.

Please read these inspiring words from Mara Kiesling, Executive Director of (NCTE) the National Center for Transgender Equality:

Dear Jaimie,

By now, you’ve likely heard about a terrifying memo circulating within the Trump administration that attempts to put heartless restraints on the rights of trans people.

This is a direct attack on trans people. This proposal is a significant escalation in the administration’s war on the rights of trans people, and it is not OK. NCTE will do everything we can to stop this rule in its tracks and to stop this administration. With your support, we will work night and day to protect trans people’s rights.

You should know that this rule will not eliminate the precedents set by dozens of federal courts over the last two decades affirming the full rights and identities of transgender people. It will not undo the consensus of the medical providers and scientists across the globe who see transgender people, know transgender people, and urge everyone to accept us for who we are. And no rule—no administration—can erase the experiences of transgender people and our families.

Transgender people are strong, resilient, and used to retaining our dignity in a world that refuses to respect us. NCTE is leading the charge to fight back against this extremist attack. And it’s our supporters like you that allow us to continue this fight.

Thank you for all that you do,

Mara Keisling
Executive Director, National Center for Transgender Equality
