ST. LOUIS – Midway through his final show as Miss Gay Illinois America 2013 last night at Meyer’s Grove, Diva Coppafeel (aka Anthony Volkman) was surprised on stage by Miss Gay Illinois promoters Chad Johnson and Curt Godier, along with Miss Gem City promoter Steve Delaney with a special honor – a proclamation from Illinois Governor Pat Quinn.

Delaney worked with the governor’s office in procuring the historic tribute. According to MGIA organizers, this is the first time a proclamation of this kind has been given to a female impersonation title holder and system.

The proclamation, in part, recognizes Coppafeel and Miss Gay Illinois America weekend on Aug. 22-23. The pageant will be held next weekend at the Casino Queen in East St. Louis, Ill. as a slate of qualified contestants compete for the coveted sash and crown.

Quinn, a longtime champion of the LGBT community, signed marriage equality into law in Illinois late last year. The law went into effect on June 1, 2014.

Miss Gay Illinois America has been in operation for over 40 years as both a state and regional preliminary. It is one of the oldest qualifying contests to the storied Miss Gay America pageant system.
